First class mail is only permitted for smaller packages weighing less than 3.5 ounces, whereas Priority Mail is permitted for packages weighing up to 70 pounds. The other distinction is that, in the event that a package is lost or damaged in transit, Priority Mail includes insurance coverage.

Priority Mail can include packages that weigh up to 70 lbs, while First Class Mail is only allowed to send smaller packages that weigh less than 3.5 ounces. The other distinction is that Priority Mail includes insurance protection in case a package is lost or damaged in transit.
