How Amazon Sellers Can Use ChatGPT

The history of AI-based Chatbots dates back to 1966 when the first such program, codenamed ‘ELIZA’, was launched by a German MIT professor named Joseph Weizenbaum. Starting from 2010 onwards, mega-corporations like Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft released their separate versions of digital assistants (Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa, and Cortana, respectively), all of which boasted capabilities that enabled them to take text-based requests from users and provide intelligent answers to varying degrees.

With increasing investments in Artificial Intelligence by big businesses and the success and popularity of the AI mentioned above assistants, the time seemed ripe for the next step forward in the field of AI.

Nothing, however, prepared the world for ChatGPT.

What is ChatGPT?

Shortened form of (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), ChatGPT is the latest AI phenomenon by OpenAI, an American Artificial Intelligence company that had previously made a name for itself by launching the DALL-E and DALL-E 2 AIs in early 2021, which used natural language (mostly English) feedback to generate digital images. OpenAI used the clout gained from those projects to introduce ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that has blown everyone away with its capabilities. This AI tool works on a straightforward premise: it takes user input in text messages. It provides intelligent answers by sampling information and patterns available on the web related to similar queries and using various machine-learning techniques.

Although not all of the answers provided by ChatGPT are accurate, nobody seems to care. Within three short months of the initial launch, most people worldwide with access to the internet have already tried it. Its popularity predictably attracted interest from the corporate world, with Microsoft announcing in January 2023 that it was acquiring ChatGPT founder OpenAI and planned to invest a whopping $10 billion to advance the AI further. With that kind of investment, it is inevitable that ChatGPT – or at least its juiciest features – will soon become exclusive to commercial users only.

How can Amazon Sellers use ChatGPT?

As with every other type of business and facet of life, ChatGPT has also significantly impacted the world of eCommerce. Comparisons conducted by reviewers between ChatGPT and AWS machine learning services have already proven that ChatGPT buries similar services offered by AWS deep under the ground.

They are noticing that many eCommerce businesses are utilizing the unique capabilities of ChatGPT for Amazon FBA to fine-tune their online businesses. Let us look at how Amazon sellers may use this tool to achieve their goals.

Planning Project Launch

Suppose you launch a new product on Amazon before the end of 3rd quarter in the year 2023 and have a head start of 6 months starting from early March. The first logical step is to create a schedule that maps out every move that has to be made from the start of March till September 1, 2023. That schedule has to cover everything in between, such as the necessary timelines for different launch modules. These action items must be implemented to achieve objectives, contingency planning for rainy days, breaks, user feedback, and maximum available time capitalization. You can get to business by relaying your intentions to the chatbot. Start typing:

“Create a schedule for me to launch my new product on September 1, 2023. Include timelines, action items, breaks, user feedback, contingency planning”, and press Enter.

Well, guess what? Millions of people have been making such plans for decades, and those plans have been uploaded on the internet, where ChatGPT has been able to view them and get a sense of how a product launch on Amazon within six months is supposed to go about. The AI bot has made a logical rundown of every step with realistic timelines that take advantage of all the 180 days available in-between the initiation and completion of the project.

Of course, it is still a schedule generated by an AI, which needs to understand all the underlying complexities of product launches on Amazon as a human being would. Still, it provides a template of how things are supposed to be, and now it will be up to the people involved with that particular product launch to iron out the details and tweak the schedule to fit right into their vision of the project plan.

Finding Complementary Products

On each product listing, Amazon’s A9 algorithm displays other products that it thinks will enhance the experience of the product that the customer is currently viewing. Most customers agree with the A9, as the complementary products are a multiple lead generation source for prospective sellers.

While the easiest way of finding complementary products is by opening up a product listing and watching what Amazon throws at the audience, however, if you are looking to go a step further and figure out for yourselves what products could be an excellent addition to a dog leash, you can ask ChatGPT to see what happens:

“Suggest additional product ideas for a company that sells dog leashes.”

Although less refined and optimized in eCommerce than the A9, ChatGPT is nonetheless an AI capable of monitoring past trends and information to determine what products might go hand-in-hand with a dog leash. Sellers can use this information to further their product catalogue and approach the targeted audience with more relevant products.

Customer Service

ChatGPT is a god-send for Amazon sellers who have been having sleepless nights due to handling the ever-difficult customer services, and Amazon employees use ChatGPT to help out in customer service. Due to the glut of eCommerce platforms, and the vast number of choices available thanks to stiff competition, the customers have been spoiled big time and demand top-notch customer services from all the sellers who want their money.

Because customer complaints are usually lodged in text form, ChatGPT could be used to help out. It could be overwhelming for an eCommerce business to keep up with the flood of customer complaints and feedback messages constantly arriving, let alone providing a custom response that will be considered satisfactory by all of them.

Considering this idea’s explosive potential, it will be plausible to imagine OpenAI (or Microsoft, at this point) releasing a commercial ChatGPT-based extension or tool dedicated to dealing with customer complaints on Amazon and other eCommerce platforms. For now, each complaint will have to be fed to this AI chatbot to provide as much of an appropriate response to a customer complaint as is conceivable.

For example, suppose a customer has recently bought a dog leash, which broke within a week of purchase. Let us throw this complaint at ChatGPT to see how it responds:

“Respond to a customer complaint stating that their dog leash broke within a week of purchase.”

ChatGPT’s response is ideal for this situation. It consoles the customer by letting them know their problem is understood and empathized. Every possible remedy is suggested to improve the customer’s situation, including a product replacement or refund. The whole response has been lodged in a very courteous and professional manner, just as a disappointed customer might want it to be.

OpenAI’s chatbot can handle queries and complaints by understanding them in the natural language (in this case: English) and provide answers based on pre-existing samples of answers to similar queries. This capability is a huge asset in a field that thrives on understating customer problems and providing responses that resonate with disaffected clients.

Writing Bullets For Product Listings

Writing up effective bullet points for an Amazon product listing goes a long way in optimizing it, considering that many users skip straight to that particular aspect of a listing.

The process of doing that is straightforward; type

“Write ten bullets, 500 bytes each, for an Amazon product listing selling a dog leash.”

and hit Enter. ChatGPT will provide you with precisely what you asked for: 10 bullet points for an Amazon product listing of a dog leash, where every single one of the bullets will be 500 bytes or less.

You can go one step further by optimizing your bullets with keywords. Pull up the top-ranked keywords for the corresponding product listing, ideally through a professional analytics application (like Helium10, JungleScout etc.), copy the top 10-15 among those keywords, and paste or write them down below the query you just entered for bullet points. It should go like this:

“Write ten bullets, 500 bytes each, for an Amazon product listing selling a dog leash.

Keyword1

Keyword2

Keyword3….”

You get the picture. Just hit Enter when you’re done, and let the AI chatbot do its magic. In this case, it will integrate the keywords you just provided into the bullet points you had generated earlier—talk of optimization.

Integrating keywords into a product listing can easily take down an hour or two of your time, and ChatGPT just effortlessly pulls it off in seconds.

Rewrite Product Listings

Amazon pros suggest that product listings be as simple as possible so that everyone can comprehend them and feel enthusiastic about buying the products listed. The idea is to write the listing so that even a student in his 5th grade can understand it. ChatGPT can do that for you, although you should also beware: one of the cons of using ChatGPT to write on Amazon is that it is an AI program that cannot replicate the quality you would expect from a product listing created by an actual human being.

If you think your existing product listing needs to do that, you can instantly remedy that. Go to Amazon, open up the product listing for a dog leash, and copy all the bullets.

Then, open ChatGPT and write down the following:

“Write these bullets for a dog leash product in a way a 5th grader can understand.”

Now, paste the bullets you copied from the product listing below the query you just entered on ChatGPT:

“Write these bullets for a dog leash product in a way a 5th grader can understand.”

Bullet1

Bullet2

Bullet3…”

and remember, the most important part is pressing the Enter key to see the fruits of your labour.

ChatGPT will write those bullets down in a way that will be easier for even a 5th grader to grasp. You can see that the AI chatbot has broken down those bullets to such a simplified level it would be impossible for anyone not to understand it.

I can’t speak for the rest of humanity, but I would’ve been able to understand everything these bullets are trying to convey during my 5th grade. Also, a side-effect of this exercise is that you might start wondering how many 5th graders have ChatGPT analyzed to come up with that information.

We know we did.

Utilize Customer Feedback For Business Growth.

The interactions between this AI tool and customers can be analyzed to gather customer preferences and behaviour data. As the customers will be interacting with an AI and not an actual human being, it will also mean that the data will be relatively free of biases and inaccuracies resulting from the interaction between two actual human beings.

The Amazon use cases of customer data gathered in this particular way are endless. This data could be used to arrange your Amazon store in a customer-friendly way, optimize product listings, and design effective marketing and advertising campaigns on Amazon in ways that appeal to more and more potential customers.

Some of the more ambitious eCommerce entrepreneurs can go one step further: by deeply analyzing this data to determine which one of the customer complaints and issues are not being addressed by any other brand, product or service currently available on Amazon and design a product to do just that, thereby claiming a whole market niche for their own. Sky is the limit on this one.

Dealing with Amazon Seller Support

Amazon’s business model is customer-centric, which means it can get downright brutal with the sellers on the platform. Sellers might get their accounts suspended for the tiniest of policy infringements, or sometimes, no infringements as far as the sellers are concerned.

Most sellers try to avoid violating Amazon’s policies like a plague, but that is only sometimes successful. Amazon still finds creative ways to suspend sellers’ accounts now and then. Suppose you are one of those disaffected sellers who think that their seller account has been unjustly tossed away by the eCommerce giant. In that case, your best bet is to request Amazon that they might have made a mistake, without telling them that they have made a mistake, or without being emotional, or with being perfectly logical and articulate after having your livelihood put on hold, which you built-up with years of hard work.

If it sounds like hard work, it is. Amazon always considers itself on the right side of history when it blocks a seller’s central account and only expects logical arguments from the corresponding sellers in their complaint, complete with an apology from the seller admitting their wrongdoing and a concise rundown of the steps they will take in the future to address the mistake they have committed.

Amazon thinks like a machine, and now you have a machine of your own to deal with that machine. Let ChatGPT’s algorithm guide us on how to lodge a perfect request to Amazon to reinstate your suspended account:

“Write an email to Amazon Seller Central to reinstate a product that was incorrectly suspended for product quality concerns.”

And boom, let a machine talk to another machine. ChatGPT does everything Amazon might expect from a seller whose account has been suspended. This request shows Amazon that you know how it works and how it maintains its high standards but also presents the case that a misunderstanding might have occurred during the interpretation of the rules and that the seller probably got wronged without accusing Amazon of being unfair. The response also assures Amazon that every possible step will be taken to ensure that product listings from the seller will fulfil all the quality standards Amazon sets in the future. That Amazon should give that seller another chance by being kind enough to reinstate the seller account for only this time.

Just the way Amazon likes it.

There is still no guarantee that Amazon will reinstate the suspended account because Amazon is the one calling the shots and cannot be forced into making or taking a decision. However, sellers will boost their chances of being seriously considered for an account reinstatement by talking to Amazon logically and articulately about what Amazon expects from all its sellers.

Conclusion

Life as we know it will not be the same anymore. ChatGPT is an explosive new technology that is set to facilitate and disrupt at the same time. Successful people and entities always embrace innovations and find ways to use them to their advantage. The benefits offered by ChatGPT to prospective FBA sellers are limitless, and Amazon retailers are only bound by their imagination when it comes to exploiting OpenAI’s dynamic chatbot to further their eCommerce interests.
