How to stop FBA from packing fragile items in poly mailers / envelopes?

1. Understand FBA’s Packaging Rules

Amazon’s fulfillment system prioritizes speed and efficiency over fragile handling. Even if you mark an item as fragile, robots and packers often ignore it. Amazon assumes sellers send items ready to withstand typical handling—including drops of up to 3 feet.

Key takeaway: Your inbound prep must make the item independently durable. Fragile flags alone won’t force box-only packaging.

2. Use Overboxing

Overboxing is the most effective method to prevent fragile items from being put in poly mailers.

  • Place your fragile item in a sturdy, product-appropriate box.

  • Add cushioning materials (bubble wrap, air pillows, foam peanuts) so the item doesn’t touch the box edges.

  • Seal the box tightly and clearly mark it “Do Not Use Poly Mailer” on the outside.

  • Use a slightly larger box than the minimum size to give room for cushioning.

Even if Amazon’s system wants to use a poly mailer, the item physically cannot fit, so it will be packed in a box.

3. Use FNSKU or Prep Guidance for Box Requirement

Amazon allows sellers to include prep instructions for fulfillment centers.

  • Add special prep instructions in Seller Central:

    • Label as Fragile

    • Do not pack in poly mailers

    • Must be boxed

  • Combine this with “Ship in original manufacturer packaging” if your item comes boxed.

Note: These instructions are guidance only. They do not guarantee poly mailers won’t be used, but it reduces the chance when paired with overboxing.

4. Package for a 3-Foot Drop

Amazon explicitly expects items to survive a 3-foot drop test.

  • Wrap the product in multiple layers of bubble wrap.

  • Place it in a double-walled box or use a pre-made padded box.

  • Ensure no empty space inside. Even small movement can cause damage in transit.

This makes it less likely FBA will try to fit the item in a soft envelope.

5. Consider Multi-Unit Packaging

If possible, bundle fragile items with protective fillers or ship multiple units together in a box. Single small fragile items are more likely to be put in poly mailers.

6. Escalate to FBA Packaging Team

Some sellers have success escalating:

  1. Open a case in Seller Central with specific examples of items being damaged due to poly mailer packaging.

  2. Include:

    • ASINs affected

    • Photos of damages

    • Desired handling instructions

  3. Ask FBA explicitly to require box-only packaging for that SKU.

Success varies. Amazon may note it in your product handling instructions, but it’s not guaranteed for all fulfillment centers.

7. Evaluate FBM for Fragile Products

If damage persists, Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM) is often better for fragile products. You can control:

  • Box quality

  • Cushioning

  • Carrier choice

  • Packaging materials

This eliminates the randomness of FBA packers and poly mailers.

Summary

  • Marking items as fragile is not enough.

  • Overbox everything so poly mailers are physically impossible.

  • Include clear prep instructions in Seller Central.

  • Use sturdy boxes and proper cushioning for 3-foot drop protection.

  • Escalate to FBA with examples if poly mailers keep being used.

  • Consider FBM for extremely fragile products.
